I have married a wonderful man. However, how his mother ever survived his child hood is beyond me. You see, as a child, Chris:
- Caught a live bull frog out of a toilet and carried it around (I can't imagine the diseases)
- Told his mom, "Hey, look at this lizard I caught...It doesn't have any legs!" (Yes...it was a snake)
- At the age of 5, he single handily caught a live, grown turkey with his bare hands.
- He choked on candy in the back of the car, requiring a hasty stop and the Heimlich.
- Got his index finger cut off by chasing girls in 2nd grade.
- The day after he cut off his finger, he stepped on glass while wading and fishing in a pond and got stitches on the bottom of his foot.
- I'm sure there are many, many more that his sweet mom has sheltered me from.
That was only to age 10. I won't even begin to mention the shenanigans he pulled while he was a teenager.
I say all of that to say this: I have TWO just like him!
I'm sure that I would definitely fit into the category of "Helicopter Parent", but I really can't help it. We worked really hard to have these kids, and I'm not ready to give them up yet.
Every time one of the boys pulls a little stunt, Chris smiles and starts to sing one of two songs:
He's mine, that one
Got a wild-hair side and then some
It's no surprise what he's done
He's ever last last bit of my old man's son
And I'll take the blame
And claim him every time
yeah, he's mine! (Rodney Atkins)
or
He's gonna get in trouble
we're gonna get in fights
I'm gonna lose my temper and some sleep
It's safe to say that
I'm gonna get my payback
if he's anything like me (Brad Paisley)
I guess I have to take comfort in the way that both of these songs end.
Yeah man, he's mine and he'll always be
The best thing that ever happened to me
You can't turn it off like electricity
I will love him unconditionally
And I'll take the blame
And claim him every time
Yeah, y'all, he's mine
I thank God, he's mine
and
there's worse folks to be like
Aw he'll be alright
if he's anything like me
I know that my children are only on loan from God for a little while, but please say an extra prayer that I can keep them safe while they are in my care. They are so much like their father!
